Dr. Mikao Usui  is the founder of Reiki.  He lived at the end of the 19th century in Japan and discovered Reiki during a 21 day fast and meditation near Kyoto on Mount Kurama.  Dr Usui was born on August 15th 1865 and died on March 9th 1926. He founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (Usui Reiki Healing Method School) in Tokyo and acted as its first president. By the 1940s there were 40 Reiki schools spread over Japan. He came to recognize that although he could help the physical body a new way of living was needed. This prompted him to set up the Reiki principles which are listed below.

Dr Chijiro Hayashi was initiated as Dr. Usui's successor a few years before his death in 1926. He opened a private clinic in Tokyo where practitioners were trained and patients were treated. It was here that Mrs. Hawayo Takata visited for several months of treatment.

Mrs.Hawayo Takata was a young Japanese business woman living in Hawaii suffering from a number of serious disorders including a tumor. She went to Dr Hayashi's Reiki clinic in Japan and had wonderful success with Reiki. Takata became Hayashi’s student and became a Grand Master in 1938. She brought Reiki to the United States and trained 22 Reiki Masters before her death in 1980. Her explanation of Universal Energy is as follows. "There is endless and enormous energy in the Universe. It is's ultimate source is the Creator... it can stem from the sun the moon or stars...It is a limitless force.  It is the source of energy that makes the plants grow...the birds fly.  When a human being has pain, problems, he or she can draw from it.  It is an ethereal source, a wave length of great power which can revitalize, restore harmony".

Today there are many branches of Reiki. Some Reiki masters have formed themselves into organizations while others work independently. The traditional Reiki system still exists following Usui, Hayashi and Takata.

Note. Some of the historical information came from the book “Reiki Fire” by Frank Arjava Petter.
